Summary of Dairy Trial Seale-Hayne College, University of Plymouth, 2004

Objective

To study the effect of Magnetically Conditioned drinking water on the health and milk production of a group of mid to late lactation Holstein dairy cows.

Method

  • 20 mid to late lactation cows were selected at random and divided into 2 groups of 10 cows which were balanced for previous average seven day milk yield, body condition, live weight and Somatic Cell Count (SCC).
  • One group received Magnetically Conditioned Drinking Water - the Mgt group.
  • The second group received Non-Treated Drinking Water - the NMgt group.
  • All the cows were offered the same semi-complete diet mixture and less than 6kg dairy compound 21% protein in the parlour according to yield on a flat rate basis which remained unchanged throughout the 28 day trial.

    Results

Over a 28 day period NMgt group Mgt group Mgt/Increase/Decrease
    Milk Yield (Lts/cow/day) 21.0 22.3 +1.3
    Total Fat (Kgs/day) 0.97 1.00 +0.03
    Total Protein (Kgs/day) 0.77 0.80 +0.03
    Milk SCC (000/ml) 304.6 289.1 -5.1%
    Drinking Water pH 7.7 7.5 -0.2
    Urine pH 7.7 7.7 =

This fully controlled trial over a 28 day recording period showed that a group of mid to late lactation cows drinking Magnetically Conditioned Drinking Water produced :-

  • An extra Av. 1.3lts/cow/day than a parallel balanced group of untreated cows.
  • An extra Av. 03.Kgs Total Fat/cow/day.
  • An extra Av. 03.Kgs Total Protein/cow/day.
  • A drop of 5.1% in Av. SCC.
  • A drop in the Mgt water pH when compared to the NMgt water.
  • The Mgt trough water was visibly clearer than the NMgt water which confirms our findings in our commercial dairy farm assessments.

A 100 cow herd producing an extra 1.3lts/cow/day at 16p per litre over a 305 day lactation is worth an extra £6,344 on the Milk Cheque.

The trial confirmed that Magnetically Treated Water Reduced Water pH but no change was seen in the urine pH, which shows that there is no upset in the body's pH equilibrium. We believe this drop in drinking water pH is responsible for increasing metabolic availability of minerals in the cow's body as indicated by many reports from farmers who have installed the Correct Magnet Dairy System reporting a reduction in the numbers of cases of Milk Fever.
